Why Wildflowers Keep Appearing in My Paintings
Every summer, the ditches and open spaces here explode into color. Not in a loud, dramatic way, but in soft bursts of pinks, golds, oranges, violets, and tiny whites catching the sunlight. Wildflowers are easy to overlook. They don’t announce themselves. They simply bloom where they are, quietly offering beauty to anyone who cares to notice.
Maybe that’s why they keep showing up in my paintings.
I’ve always been drawn to the kinds of beauty you almost miss. The kind that requires slowing down, or at least looking twice. Wildflowers remind me of the parts of life that don’t demand attention, but deserve it. They’re resilient. They grow in gravel, wind, sun, storms. They bloom anyway.
There’s something deeply human in that.
When I paint wildflowers, I’m not just painting petals and stems. I’m painting a feeling - that gentle, grounded, everyday magic that exists all around us, even on days when we feel too busy or too tired to see it.
I think of quiet evening drives on backroads.
I think of walking my dogs as the sky shifts from gold to lavender.
I think of childhood summers when time felt slower and the air smelled like fresh-cut hay.
Wildflowers show up in my work the same way they show up in life - without planning, without ceremony, simply because they’re part of the landscape that raised me and continues to hold me.
They remind me to pay attention.
To soften.
To look for beauty in the ordinary.
And maybe that’s why people connect with them, too. We are all, in our own way, trying to bloom where we are. Trying to hold onto moments that feel real and alive. Trying to remember that joy doesn’t have to be dramatic, it can be quiet and small and still hold everything.
So, the wildflowers will keep appearing.
On the canvas.
On the roadside.
In the places we least expect them.
